LIFESTYLE: Hurricane Florence Is A Good Rehearsal For Winter Weather

By D. Lanier Shook                      September 14, 2018

Winter is coming. (Sorry I had to go there.) Right now Hurricane Florence is drowning the coast of North Carolina and everyone west is bracing for the worst. But as you count your bottles of water and flashlight batteries you should remember that winter indeed is coming. The conditions we may be facing in the Upstate of South Carolina and Western North Carolina are eerily similar to what we may be facing again in a few months.

Hurricanes bring the possibility of power outages, impassable roads, downed trees, and water outages. Winter weather brings the possibility of power outages, impassable roads, downed trees, and water outages. Please, please prepare for Florence —stay safe and survive the storm — but remember, winter is coming and this is a great time to make a list of what you’ll need when it comes.

There are many, many resources you can look up to prepare for winter weather — how to prepare your home, car, and workplace. But the most important resource is you — your situation right now probably won’t change that much between now and December. As you face this storm take the time to look around your life and think about winter. Life moves fast so jot down a few points on a notepad, a napkins, or even record them on your phone.

Remember — this is a dress rehearsal. Life is giving you a taste of what may come. Take advantage of it.
