LIFESTYLE: Dawn Dish Detergent Saved My Sanity, My Dignity, and Ronald McDonald’s Shirt.

By D. Lanier Shook            August 16, 2017

I’m smiling because Dawn got the hamburger grease out of my shirt — you can’t even tell it was ever there. Ronald is smiling because I didn’t have a spare shirt with me and I don’t look good in yellow or horizontal stripes.

My day was ruined! I had a big grease stain on my shirt and no time to drive back to the house before my appointment. (For a reason I don’t recall I didn’t have a spare shirt with me — hey, even us travel gurus have bad days.) Surely — I thought — the soap in the restaurant bathroom would get it out. But did it? Noooo. My day was ruined!

What would you have done in my place? I was certain the soap in the restaurant bathroom would get it out. So I stopped at a drugstore and grabbed one of those little stain remover sticks manufactured by major detergent chains. Fortunately I read the fine print before I bought it and discovered it specifically did not remove grease. Oh, great. I was not happy.

I’m actually hiding behind this because of an unfortunate ketchup bottle incident at a hot dog eating contest. Sometimes the front row isn’t all its cracked up to be.

So there I was in the drugstore kicking myself for not having a spare shirt. I literally had taken off my shoe and was ready to smack myself with it. Fortunately that was when I noticed the dish detergent. It saved my day and saved my dignity because the clerk had just come around the corner.

I immediately did what any sane individual did — I shook my shoe out and mumbled something about a stupid pebble. Then I grabbed the dish detergent — it happened to be Dawn — and a jug of water and hobbled up to the register. (I was in a hurry and didn’t get my shoe on very well.)

Once outside I applied the water to my shirt, then the Dawn, then rinsed it out. It worked. I was so happy I nearly danced around the car, but I still have to wedge my shoe the rest of the way on.

Today I carry a bottle of Dawn in my car. See, dish detergent advertises it will take grease off dishes so it does the same on other stuff, too. Even though I’ve only used it twice in a year, its been worth every penny. (According to my friend Beth it’s also good for washing kittens who are too little for flea collars. I tried to interview a local kitten about the subject, but it backed away holding a crucifix in front of it as soon as I mentioned water.)

No matter how little you eat out, no matter whether you have small children or not, no matter what you have to carry this in your car. Dawn isn’t the only brand out there, just make certain it cuts grease. I hope you never need to use it, but if you do even once you will be beyond grateful.
