By D. Lanier Shook                                March 18, 2015

One of Western North Carolina’s lesser known attractions is our horse country in Polk County. If you like horses, parties, or pageantry you need to check out the 69th Blockhouse Steeplechase in Tryon in just about a month and a half. Even you just like one of the three you’ll have a ball.

This is the horse and those are the ties hanging from the powerlines in the background.

Morris the Horse probably won’t be joining the fun, but you never know.

The Steeplechase is an amazing event, attracting thoroughbred horses and crowds numbering in the tens of thousands. If you enjoying Downton Abbey or any period drama you’ll love the pomp and the parties of the Steeplechase. For more information you can click here to visit the Steeplechase website.

This is an exciting event which occurs rain or shine. There is tailgating, a miniature horse show, a dog show including hounds and beagles, but most importantly there are contests for both hats and tailgate parties. For even more information click here to read the Frequently Asked Questions where you can find out about the hat and tailgate contests.

If you own a business the Blockhouse Steeplechase is a great way to let all those people know what you have to offer. For as little as a few hundred dollars you can get in on the action. If you’re interested click here to read the 2015 Sponsor Opportunity Guide.
