 1. The Atmosphere

The first thing you’ll notice when you arrive in Jonesborough is the atmosphere. If you are a fan of history or historical architecture then you are gonna have a ball. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of architecture or history you’ll enjoy the city’s hometown feel. Drugstores, diners, and shops take you back in time. Click here to visit the city’s website and learn more about what it has to offer. The website offers a tour of the town, directions, information about its past, and a calendar of events.

2. The History

Jonesborough is not only a historic town — its the historic town. Jonesborough holds the record of the oldest town in Tennessee. Today the city of Jonesborough and its citizens work really hard to keep that history alive and intact. As a result Tennessee’s oldest town really feels like Tennessee’s oldest town. Many of the buildings predate the American Civil War and just like in Charleston, you’ll find lots of historic markers in front of them. Click here to visit the official Jonesborough history home page.

4. The Location

Jonesborough is amazingly easy to get to from Asheville. Here are the easiest ways to reach it.

  • Take I-26E (old US 23) toward Johnson City, but take Exit 37 at Erwin and follow the signs. This is probably the most direct route. Remember that this is a two lane road but its in pretty good shape.
  • Take I-26E to Johnson City and take Exit 19. Turn left and follow State of Franklin Road until you intersect Highway 321 and 34. Take a left and you’re headed for Jonesborough. This exit takes you past several incredible shopping centers you may want to spend some time at.
