What are your plans for Mother’s Day? How about a a Saturday spent together enjoying art, great music, and good food in a picturesque town just down the road? If that sounds like a good idea then you need to plan on heading for Valdese, North Carolina on Saturday, May 10.
Valdese is small town with an amazing blend of history, art, and culture that’s only about an hour from Asheville. In the past we’ve shared about their great dining, the great entertainment, and some of the murals you can see there. All of these come together next month for an incredible start to the Mother’s Day weekend.
Now is the time to clear your schedule on Saturday, May 10 when Valdese will host a My Fair Lady Hat Parade starting about 11 a.m. at Jacumin Plaza. This is sponsored by Sandi Walker of Dolls & Designs in Valdese. You’ll want to click here to visit Sandi’s website where you can learn more her shop. Sandi not only is the largest dollmaker in North Carolina, she also makes dolls to order and teaches classes in dollmaking. (She’ll make a doll that looks just like someone and that sounds like a great birthday or Mother’s Day present.)
Sandi knows that nothing helps your outfit like a hat and that’s why she hosts the annual My Fair Lady Hat Parade. The Parade has no entry fee and there will be awards for the youngest hat, oldest hat, best hat, and most outrageous hat— as judged by the audience. Once the judging is over the entire collection of hats will go on a parade around a bit of downtown Valdese and then return to the Plaza.
This event and the town itself would be worth the trip, but there’s more. The same Saturday the Valdese Heritage Art Center(click here to visit their website) is holding Art in the Plaza. This will be an incredible event featuring the following craft demonstrations.
- woodcarving and woodburning
- A jewelry demonstration where children can make a bracelet.
- A Mother’s Day art exhibit where kids can make a piece of art for Mother’s Day.
Valdese is an incredible place to visit. At about an hour away its almost the perfect destination. Mother’s Day weekend is an incredible time to discover it’s charm. For even more reasons — and other great events — click here to visit the town’s website.
