ROADTRIP: Hickory’s Union Square Is The Place You’ll Want to Visit

By D. Lanier Shook                                  July 20, 2013

If you haven’t been to Hickory recently you’re missing an awesome city with a lot to offer. There’s great shopping, awesome museums, and incredible dining. But the one place in Downtown Hickory you have to visit is Union Square.

This is Union Square, where you need to visit.

Union Square is a great place to relax after a day of shopping. There are comfortable benches and tables to enjoy a book after a day of shopping. You can choose from several restaurants on the Square for dinner. Best of all there’s plenty of parking.

See? Plenty of parking just this side of the square.

When you visit Union Square make sure to check out the Veteran’s Memorial. It’s a captured German howitzer from World War One. The cannon has obvious battle damage and is a great place to pause and remember the men and women who have served our nation. You’ll also want to look at the monument to commemorate the construction of an emergency polio hospital in 1944.

Before you go to Hickory make sure you click here to read my article about The Hickory Furniture Mart and click here to read a personal welcome our readers received from Hickory’s Mayor a few years ago.
