Hickory, NC is famous for its furniture and textiles. Both of these come together at the Hickory Furniture Mart to create a unique combination of shopping experience and exhibition hall. Its an ideal place to spend an hour or two either alone or with the family.
The Hickory Furniture Mart is a wonderland of style, architecture and home fashion. You can pick up a map at one of the four visitor centers at each entrance. Or you can wander through the four levels exploring and enjoying the sheer size of the the place. Or you could get a map and still wander in awe of the furniture mart.
Hickory Furniture is located near incredible shopping, dining, lodging and Interstate Forty. Plus its free, so you can leave and come back when ever you like. But if you want to stay through lunch, try out the two restaurants inside the Mart.
Grapevines is a full service restaurant on on the second level with a wide selection and a great atmosphere. The menu has something for every one’s taste. The intimate and picturesque atmosphere promises a pleasant and memorable dining experience.
Taste Full Beans is a coffee shop on the first level where you can grab a lighter snack.
If you need to catch your breath there are great benches throughout the Mart and a Reading Room on the second floor next to Grapevines. You can relax in comfortable chairs while catching up on the latest home fashion trends.
The Furniture Museum is a attraction you must visit. It features a nice collection of early furniture making equipment, a collection of furniture from the thirties and forties and a image gallery of furniture related pictures. Check out the Furniture Hall of Fame Corner and you’ll be able to put faces on some names you may have heard of. There is a presentation theater but I missed the show for that day. The Furniture Museum is impressive because it can be appreciated by visitors of all ages. Look for the miniatures of furniture in the Museum and throughout the Mart.
Time constraints kept me from popping into any of the stores and shops when I visited. But it still took an hour just to walk through the Mart. The entire Mart has a sense of wonder partly because of the fantastic variety of architecture and styles. Each shop and each section has a different feel to it.
This is a destination in and of itself. Reserve several hours to truly appreciate the Hickory Furniture Mart and its shops. Their hours are in the process of changing so visiting their website is a good idea. Its also a great way to plan for your visit. Visit the Mart’s website by clicking here.
